These rods arrived in the office quite literally as we were going to press, but no worries, we felt you just had to see them and pulled out all the stops accordingly.
Fox has introduced a full range from a 12ft 2.75lb tc through to a monster 13ft 3.5lb tc specification. The company has also produced dedicated spod and marker rods, and a nice touch is the 2.75lb model with a full EVA handle for just £114.99.
This price bracket in the rod market is massively competitive, and Fox will definitely have to fight for its share, although first impressions of the Ranger put it in the same bracket as the rest of the field.
The rod has a very pleasant through action that will make playing fish a pleasure. The 2.75lb model we looked at has seven Slik rings that are small, neat and braid-friendly, from a 14mm tip down through to a 40mm butt ring. The reel seat is the soft touch CR18 and will handle most reels, and its design fits pleasantly in the hand. Cosmetically the rod is very slim, and all the graphics are quietly understated, something I personally like.
Just by bending the rod you can appreciate its hidden power, smooth action and lightness. I’m looking forward to taking the Ranger X out to test its performance – I have a feeling it will be a foregone conclusion, but I’ll let you know the outcome. Meanwhile, check it out at your local tackle shop.
